Le FC Barcelone est l’un des plus prestigieux clubs de soccer de la planète. Son statut légal de société civile à but non lucratif de même que son mode de propriété et ses structures démocratiques le distinguent de la majorité des clubs de premier plan. Dès sa fondation en 1899, le club est à la fois porté par les succès sportifs et miné par une précarité financière récurrente. Son fondateur, Joan Gamper, place l’identité nationale au cœur de sa stratégie, ce qui fait du club un véritable porte-étendard du nationalisme catalan. Le récit retrace l’évolution de cette organisation en parallèle avec l’évolution du contexte sociopolitique espagnol et catalan.

Despite the best efforts of the Francoist regime to “Spanify” the club, to this day it remains a powerful source of pride and national identity for the vast majority of Catalonians. After over a century of sporting exploits mixed with disappointments and internal conflict, the implementation of an aggressive strategy of modernization in the early 2000s has proved highly effective, as evidenced by the club’s remarkable achievements on the field and its new-found financial stability. This case examines the evolution of this organization against the backdrop of the Spanish and Catalan socio-political context.

Le cas raconte la première année de Ian Lambert comme nouveau directeur général de ElektroSecur, une PME canadienne d’une quarantaine de personnes et spécialisée dans la fabrication et la distribution de technologies véhiculaires d’urgence. La partie A du cas se centre sur les six premiers mois (septembre 2012 à février 2013) tandis que la partie B renvoie aux six mois suivants (mars à août 2013). Partie A : En septembre 2012, Ian Lambert prend la direction générale de ElektroSecur. L’entreprise a été fondée en 1997 par les deux propriétaires actuels, Daniel et Marc, qui occupent respectivement les postes de président et de VP au développement des affaires. ElektroSecur enregistre un chiffre d’affaires d’environ 7 millions de dollars généré par une cinquantaine de produits conçus à l’interne et une centaine de produits pour lesquels ElektroSecur joue le rôle de distributeur. L’entreprise génère un bénéfice net de tout au plus 20 000 $ et a toujours peiné à être rentable. Partie B : Contrairement à ce que Ian espérait six mois après sa prise de poste (partie A), la situation financière de l’entreprise ne s’est pas améliorée au cours des six mois suivants. Du point de vue financier, l’entreprise a connu la pire année de son existence. Jusqu’en mai, les ventes n’ont jamais été aussi catastrophiques.

The case looks at Ian Lambert’s first year as the new general manager of ElektroSecur, a Canadian SMB with about 40 employees, specialized in the production and distribution of emergency vehicle technologies. Part A of the case focuses on his first six months in the job (September 2012 to February 2013), while Part B shifts attention to the following six months (March to August 2013). Part A: Ian Lambert took over as general manager of ElektroSecur in September 2012. The company was founded in 1997 by its two current owners, Daniel Dufour and Marc Rorty, who are respectively president and vice-president, business development. ElektroSecur had annual sales of approximately $7 million generated by some 50 in-house products and roughly 100 products distributed by it. The company was making a small net profit of no more than $20,000 a year and had always struggled to remain profitable. Part B: Contrary to what Ian had hoped after six months on the job (Part A), the company’s financial situation did not improve over the following six months. Financially speaking, it was shaping up to be the worst year in the company’s history. Up to the month of May, sales were more catastrophic than ever.

Partie A – D’étudiante à cadre (4 p.) – Carrie entre dans la compagnie comme étudiante à temps partiel, alors qu’elle a 19 ans. Son diplôme de 1^er cycle universitaire en poche, elle accepte un poste à temps plein comme commis au Service du budget. Après six mois, à 22 ans, Carrie se fait offrir un poste de cadre de terrain. Elle ne connaît rien à la finance et l’aide de Jim, son directeur général, lui est précieuse.

Partie B – À la haute direction (4 p.) – Cette partie évoque différentes étapes de la carrière de Carrie entre 30 et 45 ans, alors qu’elle gravit plusieurs échelons à l’intérieur de la compagnie jusqu’à des postes de directrice générale.

Partie C – Couper le cordon? (4 p.) – Carrie Wagner, à 46 ans, est en vue pour un poste de vice-présidente. Elle accepte d’abord un poste de chef des Ressources humaines auprès du président et de ses premiers vice-présidents. Le cas décrit le contexte de ce nouveau poste et les difficultés qu’éprouve Carrie à être à l’aise dans un poste de « conseil », déconnecté des opérations.

Alors qu’elle occupe ce poste depuis cinq ans, une offre d’emploi à l’extérieur de la compagnie pique son intérêt. Cette occasion, combinée à plusieurs autres événements d’ordre à la fois professionnel et personnel, amène Carrie à se demander si elle ne devrait pas renoncer à un poste de VP et « couper le cordon » avec l’entreprise pour laquelle elle travaille depuis 30 ans.

This case traces Carrie Wagner’s career in a single, large international package delivery company over a 30-year period during which she rose through the ranks from a student’s summer job to senior executive positions.

Part (A) – Early Career, from Student to Manager (4 p.) – Carrie joins a large multi-national as a summer student when she is 19 years old. Upon graduation, she takes a full-time job in the budget department. After six months in this position she is promoted to manager at the age of 22. Carrie knows nothing about finance and Jim, her Executive Director, is an invaluable ally.

Part (B) – Towards Senior Management (4 p.) – This section details Carrie’s career from the age of 30 to 45, where she climbed several management levels up to the position of Executive Director.

Part (C) – Cutting the Cord? (5 p.) – At 46, Carrie is seen as a potential VP, and reluctantly accepts a job as head of Human Resources, reporting to the President and his first VPs. The case describes the challenges of this new position for Carrie and how she finds it difficult to work in an advisory role that is disconnected from operations.

After five years in this position, she becomes aware of an opportunity outside the company that piques her interest. This opportunity, combined with several other considerations, including professional as well personal factors, lead Carrie to wonder whether she should not give up on a possible VP position and "cut the cord" with the company where she has worked for 30 years.

Ce cas en deux parties traite des enjeux liés à la décision d’aller de l’avant avec la diffusion en haute définition (HD) de représentations d’opéra au cinéma par le Metropolitan Opera de New York suite à l’arrivée de son nouveau dirigeant, Peter Gelb, le 1^er août 2006. Le cas A permet aux étudiants d’évaluer la pertinence de cette décision. Toutes les informations pour cette évaluation sont incluses dans le cas. Il décrit l’état des lieux général du Met au sein de la concurrence et dans le contexte des arts de la scène lorsque Peter Gelb en prend la direction. Il fournit les éléments relatifs aux parties prenantes internes et externes, et expose le contexte de l’environnement de l’organisation (PEST, concurrence directe et indirecte à New York, autres grands Opéras américains et internationaux, etc.). Il donne aussi les éléments permettant une analyse des possibilités de renouvellement du mode de consommation de l’opéra. Le cas B décrit ce qui s’est fait et ouvre la porte sur une réflexion sur ce que pourrait faire le Met maintenant que le succès de Live in HD est établi au cinéma.

This two-part case looks at the issues related to the Metropolitan Opera’s decision to start transmitting its productions in high definition (HD) to movie theatres after the arrival of its new general manager, Peter Gelb, on August 1, 2006. Part A provides students with all the details needed to assess this decision. It outlines the Met’s general and competitive position within the performing arts at the time Gelb took over management, explains the Met’s business environment (Political, Economic, Social, and Technological (PEST) analysis, its direct and indirect competition in New York and from other major opera houses in the U.S. and around the world), and the facts needed to analyse the various distribution methods available to the Met. It allows students to determine the viability of Gelb’s plan to take the Met into movie houses, considering its implications for the company and the changes it would require to the Met’s traditional business model as well as its competitive environment. Part B introduces students to the factors underlying the Live in HD project implemented by Gelb and its commercial and financial success. It concludes with a discussion of the possible next steps in the wake of this technological innovation, given that some challenges remain (such as lowering the average age of Met audiences) and their implications from a competitive perspective.
