Bolloré Logistics Canada, transitaire international basé à Saint-Laurent au Québec, fait partie de la branche transport et logistique du Groupe Bolloré, multinationale française dirigée par la famille Bolloré. Les transitaires fournissent des solutions de transport à leurs clients en coordonnant les différents modes de transport, le dédouanement et la documentation, la manutention portuaire et la supervision générale relatifs à tous les aspects qu’il comprend. Le cas met en scène Marc Gagnon, nouvelle recrue du département d’export maritime de Bolloré Logistics Canada, qui doit répondre aux demandes de trois clients. Ces demandes correspondent à trois expéditions et transactions différentes (transport d’équipement minier en Nouvelle-Calédonie, de produits pharmaceutiques au Chili, et de matériel de spectacle circassien en Grèce). Chacune fait état d’un transport maritime international nécessitant le choix d’un Incoterm particulier (version 2020, tel que le définit la Chambre de commerce internationale) et la soumission précise qui y correspond. Pour chacune des trois situations, on décrit les caractéristiques du vendeur et de l’acheteur, leur objectif d’affaires respectif, leur relation, la marchandise et la destination.

Bolloré Logistics Canada is an international freight forwarder based in Saint-Laurent, Quebec and part of the transportation and logistics division of the Bolloré Group, a French multinational headed by the Bolloré family. Freight forwarders provide their clients with transport solutions by coordinating the modes of transportation used, customs clearance and documentation, port handling, and supervision of all shipping aspects. This case features Marc Gagnon, a new recruit in the sea freight export department of Bolloré Logistics Canada, who has to respond to calls from three clients. The three have asked about different shipments and transactions (transport of mining equipment to New Caledonia, pharmaceutical products to Chile, and circus show materials to Greece). Each client request involves international maritime shipping calling for the choice of a specific Incoterm (version 2020, as defined by the International Chamber of Commerce) and the corresponding estimate. For each of the three situations, the characteristics of the buyer and seller are described, along with their respective business objectives, their relationship, the merchandise and the destination. The three cases are presented in increasing order of difficulty.

En 2011, Samuel Maruta et Vincent Mourou, deux Français établis au Vietnam, créent Marou, une entreprise de fabrication de chocolat fin « de la fève à la tablette ». En 2018, Marou possède deux boutiques au Vietnam et exporte son chocolat dans vingt autres pays, notamment aux États-Unis, en France, en Suède, au Japon et en Corée du Sud. Son modèle d’affaires et sa marque sont profondément ancrés dans son mode d’approvisionnement en cacao exclusivement local : Marou tisse des liens étroits avec de petits fermiers vietnamiens afin de se garantir tant un approvisionnement stable qu’une qualité irréprochable, indispensable à la fabrication de chocolat haut de gamme. Tout en exposant les valeurs et la vision des fondateurs centrées sur le goût, l’achat local, le commerce équitable et durable, ainsi qu’une croissance prudente et organique, le cas présente les efforts et les actions de l’entreprise pour assurer son approvisionnement et la qualité de sa fabrication de chocolat à partir des fèves de cacao. Il décrit également la stratégie de distribution et de vente de l’entreprise, tant au Vietnam qu’à l’international. Lauréate de plusieurs prix internationaux et saluée par le New York Times qui proclamait en mars 2016 que Marou était « le meilleur chocolat au monde », l’entreprise semble bien positionnée dans la niche des chocolats de qualité bean to bar.

In 2011, Samuel Maruta and Vincent Mourou, two Frenchmen living in Vietnam, founded Marou to produce fine chocolate from bean to bar. Just seven years later, Marou had opened two shops in Vietnam and was exporting its chocolate to twenty countries, including the United States, France, Sweden, Japan, and South Korea. The company’s brand and business model were deeply rooted in its commitment to using only locally grown cacao beans: Marou had forged close ties with small Vietnamese farmers to create a reliable supply of high-quality beans, vital to the production of exquisite chocolate. While highlighting the values and vision of the company’s founders (taste, local purchasing, fair and sustainable trade, prudent and organic growth), the case outlines the company’s efforts to secure its supply of cacao beans to ensure the high quality of the chocolate it produced. The case also describes the company’s distribution and sales strategies both domestically and internationally. The winner of several international awards and lauded by the New York Times in March 2016 as producing “the best chocolate you’ve never tasted,” Marou seemed to be well positioned in the high-end “bean to bar” chocolate niche.

Le cas rend compte du parcours du Libanais Fadi Baaklini et de l’entreprise MEPCO (Middle East Paper Company), que lui et un associé ont créée en 1997. Spécialisée dans la vente puis le négoce de produits de papeterie, MEPCO est active sur les marchés du Moyen-Orient, de l’Afrique du Nord et de l’Inde. Après avoir décrit les premières tentatives entrepreneuriales de Fadi Baaklini et son début de carrière dans l’industrie du bois puis du papier, le cas se centre sur MEPCO, qui devient rapidement une prospère PME de courtage en papeterie, avec l’ouverture d’un bureau de représentation en Tunisie et d’une filiale en Inde en 2005. En 2006, Fadi Baaklini rachète les parts de son associé et devient seul propriétaire de MEPCO. Entre 2006 et 2016, MEPCO continue son développement avec de nouveaux bureaux de représentation en Égypte et au Liban. En 2017, MEPCO emploie une trentaine de personnes et son chiffre d’affaires dépasse la centaine de millions de dollars américains. Renvoyant à plus tard ses projets de retraite, Fadi Baaklini décide de se lancer dans un nouveau partenariat avec une société canadienne spécialisée dans la fabrication de produits chimiques biodégradables, afin d’exporter en Inde des produits pour le traitement des eaux usées, mais aussi pour les secteurs de l’agriculture, des pâtes et papiers, et de la volaille. D’après lui, cette opportunité pourrait faire de MEPCO une multinationale générant plusieurs milliards de dollars.

The case describes the career path of Lebanese businessman Fadi Baaklini and traces the evolution of MEPCO (Middle East Paper Company), the enterprise he founded with a partner in 1997. MEPCO started out selling paper and later became a paper trading company, operating in markets in the Middle East, North Africa, and India. After presenting Fadi Baaklini’s initial experiences as an entrepreneur and his early career in the timber industry and then the paper industry, the case focuses on MEPCO’s rapid growth into a successful paper brokerage and prosperous SME. In 2005, the company opened a sales office in Tunisia and a subsidiary in India. In 2006, Fadi Baaklini bought the shares of his business partner, becoming the sole owner of MEPCO. From 2006 to 2016, MEPCO continued to expand, opening new sales offices in Egypt and Lebanon. In 2017, MEPCO employed some thirty people and had over US$100 million in sales. Fadi Baaklini has decided to put his retirement plans on hold in order to launch a new partnership with a Canadian firm specializing in biodegradable chemicals. His plan is to export these products to India for use in waste-water treatment, as well as in the agricultural, pulp and paper, and poultry industries. He sees in this opportunity the potential to turn MEPCO into a multinational company generating billions of dollars in sales.

This case presents the initial difficulties encountered by Teaology, an Italian skincare products manufacturer seeking to penetrate the Canadian market. Well known in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the brand was unknown in Canada. Aware of their lack of experience in this market and that North American culture differed greatly from Europe’s, the owners launched a joint venture with a Montréal-based partner.

Divisé en deux parties, le cas présente Mélissa Lambert et l’entreprise Design Lambert inc. (« Lambert ») qu’elle a fondée en 2017 à Montréal. Le cas se déroule alors que Mélissa se pose des questions quant à la croissance de son entreprise, à son positionnement stratégique et aux implications tactiques qu’une éventuelle expansion à l’international engendrerait.

La partie A, « Design Lambert inc. (A) : du cuir végane pour une mode écoresponsable », met en avant les valeurs de l’entreprise, orientées vers la lutte contre la cruauté animale et la responsabilité sociale. Lambert conçoit, fait fabriquer (en Chine) et vend des accessoires de mode en utilisant des matières recyclées et du cuir végane. La partie B, « Design Lambert inc. Divided into two parts, the case presents Mélissa Lambert and the company Design Lambert Inc. (Lambert), which she founded in 2017 in Montreal. The case unfolds as Mélissa ponders the growth of her company, its strategic positioning, and the tactical implications of a possible international expansion.

Part A, “Design Lambert Inc. (A): Vegan Leather for Eco-responsible Fashion,” highlights the company’s values, which focus on the fight against animal cruelty and social responsibility. Lambert designs, manufactures (in China) and sells fashion accessories made of recycled materials and vegan leather. Part B, “Design Lambert Inc. (B): Ecoresponsibility and International Development,” presents the leather goods industry. It also examines the challenges associated with relocating production (particularly with regard to customs fees under trade agreements) and the importance of various regulations. Finally, it describes the company (value chain, competitors and marketing policies), as well as the advantages and disadvantages of four cities (Geneva, London, Los Angeles, and Paris) for the possible internationalization of the company.
