In the summer of 2019, administrators in the Procurement and logistics department (PLD) of the University of Montreal Health Centre (CHUM) were wondering if they would be able to handle the imminent surge in demand for surgical materials. In the fall of 2018, CHUM, Montreal’s French-language super-hospital, had moved to a new site in downtown Montreal. To give medical teams time to adjust to their new environment, CHUM had kept operating rooms running below full capacity, but this would change in September. The PLD team responsible for assembling the supplies needed for surgical procedures, a process known as “case picking,” was wondering how this would impact its work. Using productivity and procedure volume data provided by the logistics team, it aimed to improve its productivity and mitigate the adverse impact of the increased demand.
