Québecoin inc. (QCI) se spécialise dans le « minage » de bitcoins. Après trois années d’activités, l’entreprise exploite 5 750 dispositifs de minage (DDM) hautement énergivores. Au 31 décembre 2017, les profits atteignent un sommet, et on entame le remboursement de la marge de crédit. De plus, un grand joueur de l’industrie soumet une offre alléchante d’achat à QCI.

Le cas plonge les futurs experts-comptables auditeurs dans l’écosystème de Bitcoin et au cœur du travail de minage qui en découle, les initiant à l’environnement de la cryptomonnaie. Les étudiants sont appelés à réfléchir aux aspects économiques, juridiques et environnementaux d’une monnaie virtuelle ainsi qu’aux possibilités et aux défis qui entourent son émergence.

Québecoin Inc. (QCI) is a bitcoin mining company. After three years of operations, it was running 5,750 highly energy-intensive mining units (MUs). On December 31, 2017, profits were high, and QCI had begun repayment on its credit line. Plus, a major player in the industry had submitted a tempting offer to purchase the business.

The case plunges future auditors into the Bitcoin ecosystem and the heart of bitcoin mining, introducing them to cryptocurrency. Students are asked to reflect on the economic, legal, and environmental aspects of virtual currency and opportunities and challenges surrounding its emergence.
