Chaque année depuis 2015, la Fondation de Gaspé Beaubien organise le Défi AquaHacking pour la défense de l’eau dans la région du bassin des Grands Lacs et du fleuve Saint-Laurent (GLSL). AquaHacking (AH) prend la forme d’un hackathon (« marathon de programmation », en français), où l’on vise à générer des innovations technologiques pour conserver l’eau et intégrer l’entrepreneuriat afin de les commercialiser ou de les diffuser. Un sommet tenu en parallèle réunit les parties prenantes du bassin afin de cerner les grands enjeux et des pistes d’actions collectives.

En février 2017, l’équipe d’AH entame une réflexion stratégique pour évaluer l’impact de l’événement. Elle y prend conscience que la contribution première de AH est la mobilisation des jeunes. En effet, ces derniers deviennent des agents de changement qui mettent leurs compétences au service de la protection des cours d’eau. Au même moment, AH attire l’intérêt d’acteurs qui veulent instaurer l’initiative en dehors du bassin GLSL. L’équipe se demande quelle trajectoire suivre. Comment élargir son modèle pour en améliorer les retombées et protéger l’eau au Canada, mais aussi ailleurs en Amérique du Nord?

Every year since 2015, the de Gaspé Beaubien Foundation has organized the AquaHacking Challenge to tackle urgent water issues in the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence River Basin (GLSL) region. AquaHacking (AH) involves a hackathon that generates technological innovations for water preservation and integrates entrepreneurship to commercialize or disseminate them. A summit held concurrently brings together the basin’s stakeholders, who identify significant issues and avenues for collective action.

In February 2017, the AH team held strategic discussions to assess the event’s impact. They became aware that the primary contribution was the mobilization of youth. Indeed, thanks to the event, young people become agents of change, contributing their skills to the protection of waterways. AH had also attracted the interest of organizations that wanted to replicate the event outside the GLSL basin. The team wondered what path to follow. How could they scale up the model to improve its benefits and protect water in Canada and North America?
