The Comédie-Française is one of the most prestigious institutions in France, indeed in the world. This theatre company traces its origins back to Molière, who was forced by decree of Louis XIV to merge his company of actors, known as “la troupe du roi à l’Hôtel de Guénégaud,” with the rival Hôtel de Bourgogne troupe. This case study looks at the history and workings of this legendary theatre and examines the contribution of Jean-Pierre Miquel, who served as its Executive Director from 1993 to 2001. While preserving the institution’s traditions, Miquel restructured the Comédie-Française by having its status amended, rejuvenated its repertoire, increased the number of its actors, integrated two new theatres and expanded the company’s activities.
