Issue d'une famille aisée de la côte Est des États-Unis, nièce de président, épouse de président, femme d'avant-garde à maints égards, modèle pour beaucoup, Eleanor Roosevelt aurait tout pour être l'héroïne d'un conte de fées. Il n'en est pourtant rien. Son histoire est celle d'une fille mal aimée par sa mère, peu soutenue par son père, orpheline à 10 ans, maltraitée par sa belle-mère, trompée par son mari; celle d'une femme à l'estime de soi fragile et souvent encline à la dépression. Et pourtant, cette enfance et ces années de jeune adulte en ont fait une femme indépendante, qui a existé par elle-même, y compris comme First Lady, et qui occupe une place de choix parmi ces femmes (et ces hommes) du XX^e siècle qui ont, en partie, changé notre monde.

Coming from a wealthy family on the East Coast of the United States, niece of a President, wife of a President, woman with, in many respects, an avant-garde spirit, a model for many, Eleanor Roosevelt had all the qualities of a fairy-tale’s heroine. Her life was however nothing of the sort. Unloved by her mother, with little support from her father, orphaned at 10, mistreated by her mother-in-law, deceived by her husband; she was a woman of low self-esteem, who was prone to depression. And yet, her childhood and young adult years shaped her into an independent person, who existed on her own, even as a First Lady, and who occupied a special place among the women (and men) of the twentieth century who in many ways changed our world.
