Abstract

Set in central Queensland, Australia, the case examines the key concerns of various stakeholders involved in establishing a multi-stakeholder partnership based on the "Creating Shared Value" (CSV) model. The need for a partnership arose following a significant flood that led to the release of hundreds of gigalitres of contaminated coal-mine water into the Fitzroy Basin, affecting nearby cities, water supplies, and local ecosystems. Consequently, regional stakeholders grew alarmed about the rapid decline in water quality in the area.

Teaching objectives
  • Experientially learn about the specific governance and strategic trade-offs of multi-stakeholder partnerships attempting to tackle a “wicked problem.”
  • Critically reflect on the possibilities and limitations of creating shared value through multi-stakeholder partnerships tackling complex and cross-cutting issues.
